About 40 kilometers south of Salzburg, the more than 950-year-old Hohenwerfen Castle rises on an imposing rocky spur, 155 meters above the valley floor. A jewel of the late Renaissance in Salzburg. To the south of the city of Salzburg, near the Morzg district, lies the magnificent Hellbrunn Palace. Built at the beginning of the 17th century, the pleasure palace delights with its Mannerist architecture and the famous water features, which repeatedly surprise visitors in the extensive palace and landscape garden.

In the past, Mauterndorf Castle was an important toll station for Alpine travelers and served as a summer residence for the Prince Archbishops. Only about 2 kilometers from Salzburg’s Old Town lies the magnificent Leopoldskron Palace, picturesquely situated on the pond of the same name. It was built in 1736 as a family seat for Prince Archbishop Leopold Anton Freiherr von Firmian. Today, it is one of the most important baroque private residences in Austria. The palace also gained international fame as the original filming location for the world-famous film The Sound of Music. The impressive backdrop, the large park, and the historic architecture attract visitors from all over the world.

Mirabell Palace and the adjacent Mirabell Gardens are among Salzburg’s most famous attractions. Originally built in 1606 by Prince Archbishop Wolf Dietrich, the entire complex is now a listed building and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the Celtic Museum Hallein, you can immerse yourself in the world of the Celts and discover their art, grave finds, and living environments – combined with the fascinating history of salt mining on the Dürrnberg. Particularly impressive are accessible tunnels, a magnificent burial chamber with a two-wheeled chariot, and the over 2,500-year-old “Schnabelkanne” – a real highlight of Celtic craftsmanship. The historic Prince’s Rooms, once part of the saltworks administration, also provide insight into the salt trade and the power structure of the region.

The Local Museum Altenmarkt provides an exciting insight into the region: in the Hoamathaus and in the Dechantshoftenne there are farm implements, an old schoolroom, and the 250-year-old Grundner crib. The exhibitions illustrate the life of the people in the region.

Nature experiences

The Liechtensteinklamm near St. Johann im Pongau is one of the deepest gorges in the Alps: up to 300 m steep, only a few meters narrow – a natural monument to marvel at. Through the developed part of the gorge (1 km of 4 km gorge length) leads a hiking trail through the meter-high steep rock walls.

The gorge is open from May to September daily from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, in October until 4:00 PM – in winter it remains closed for safety reasons. You can enter the gorge via a turnstile. You should plan about 2–3 hours for a visit.

The Eisriesenwelt is an impressive natural wonder in the Tennengebirge near Werfen. With the guided tour, you can get about 1 km into the ice cave: past huge ice formations, underground halls, and bizarre stalagmites. Over 1,400 steps on smooth rock await visitors, good shoes and warm clothing are required. Photography is prohibited for safety reasons.

The Eisriesenwelt is open from May to October, daily from approx. 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM (last tour around 3:45 PM). An online ticket with a time reservation is required.

The Krimml Waterfalls are among the highest in Europe and impress with their three-stage drop height of a total of 380 meters. Along a well-developed hiking trail, you can experience the power of the water.

In the Dachstein Glacier with Ice Palace, you can reach the mountain station (2,700 m) via the impressive suspension bridge. Just a three-minute walk away, you can discover a mystical world of ice columns, artfully carved figures, and a sparkling crystal dome under the eternal ice. Good shoes and warm clothing are a must.

Panoramic road

The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is one of the most spectacular panoramic roads in the Alps: on almost 48 km with 36 hairpin bends, you drive from Fusch (Salzburg) over the Hochtor to Heiligenblut (Carinthia) – past the Kaiser Franz-Josefs-Höhe and Edelweißspitze viewpoints.

Reservoirs

In the Kaprun high mountains, visitors can expect an exciting mix of nature and technology: the two reservoirs Mooserboden and Wasserfallboden at around 2,040 m can be reached by a nostalgic inclined elevator (Lärchwand inclined elevator) and a shuttle bus – rides run from the end of May to mid-October daily from approx. 8:10 AM to 4:45 PM (last ascent approx. 3:30 PM).

Wildlife parks and zoos

In the Untertauern Leisure & Wildlife Park, visitors can experience wild encounters with deer, roe deer, mouflons, and more on around 11 ha of land – free of charge. The adjacent adventure and petting area offers a fish pond, pile dwelling, playground with cable car, play excavator, and lots of goats, rabbits, llamas, and mini-donkeys – perfect for a relaxing family day in nature.

The Rittisberg Adventure Mountain near Ramsau am Dachstein is a versatile destination for families that delights in summer and winter. With the modern combination lift (chair + gondola) you can easily reach 1,582 m, where visitors can expect a wide range of leisure activities: from the summer toboggan run (“Rittisberg Coaster”, 1.3 km) to high ropes course, fairy tale, barefoot, and nature trails to playgrounds and petting animals.
